2016 BSHS Hall of Fame on January 15th

The Bonner Springs/Edwardsville Education Foundation and the Bonner Springs High School Alumni Association are proud to announce that Frank O’Flaherty Class of 1936, and Bill Miller, Class of 1973, will be inducted into the BSHS Hall of Fame on Friday, January 15^th.

Frank O’Flaherty joined the Navy soon after his graduation from BSHS. He was appointed an Aviation Cadet in 1941 and was commissioned Ensign and ordered to active duty as a pilot on the USS Enterprise in September of that year. In June of 1942 Frank participated in the Battle of Midway against the Japanese invasion fleet. After several successful diving runs on the Japanese carrier group, Frank and his co-pilot ran out of fuel and were captured by the Japanese. They died at the hands of their captors soon after. Frank’s valor and heroism was noted by the Navy and an appreciative nation, as he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross (the highest honor in the Navy) and a ship, the destroyer escort USS O’Flaherty, was named in his honor. The ship was commissioned in April 1944.

The BSHS Hall of Fame also welcomes Bill Miller, a well known Businessman and Community Activist. The Bonner Springs and Edwardsville communities have long appreciated Bill’s community involvement; he is currently the President of the Rotary Club, and his business acumen as the owner of Body Works Massage Therapy.  Bill also has been involved in numerous civic activities including the Lake of the Forest Historic Preservation Society, the Sierra and has served in numerous leadership positions in the St Martin’s of the Fields Episcopal Church.

The Induction Ceremony for the 2016 BSHS Hall of Fame will be Friday January 15^th at the District P.E. Center. The ceremony will take place at approximately 8:30 PM at half time of the Boys’ Basketball Game with Lansing. The Alumni Association will have a display in the lobby of BSHS artifacts, and will host a social event at Twisters following the game.

Bill Kelly Alumni Open October 2nd

The Bonner Springs – Edwardsville Education Foundation will hold the fifth Braves Alumni Open at the Sunflower Hills Golf Club on October 2^nd, 2015. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Student Scholarship Fund. The Alumni Open welcomes all golfers including BSHS graduates who wish to demonstrate their skills while renewing old acquaintances. This year the Foundation is proud to announce that the event has been renamed the “Bill Kelly Alumni Open” in honor of Bill Kelly a prominent local businessman and BSHS alumnus who tragically passed away last year.

Registration will begin at 10:30, with box lunch and a Putting Contest at 10:45 a.m. Tee off will be 11:30. Entry Fees are $115 per individual or $460 per team. The entry fee entitles the golfer to participate in contests on the course, a door prize ticket and refreshment tickets. This year’s event will also include an exclusive raffle and silent auction for participants and event supporters. Among the items being raffled is a Salvador Perez signed World Series base.

The Bonner Springs High School Alumni Association is seeking 1 to 2 representatives from each class to help the Alumni Association reach as many alumni as possible.

As a representative your responsibility would be to help and maintain contact information for your class. There is no required meetings to attend, you will only serve as a liaison between the Alumni Association and your class.

Rise and Shine Breakfast on May 21st

This year’s Rise and Shine Breakfast will feature keynote speakers Barnett and Shirley Helzberg, of Helzberg Diamonds. The event will take place May 21^st, 2015 in the Bonner Springs High School Cafeteria starting at 7:10 AM.

The couple will speak at this year’s Rise and Shine breakfast, an event put on every year by the USD 204 Education Foundation. The event will also feature a music performance from the Bonner Springs Elementary Choir, scholarship presentations and various recognitions. Each year, profits from this event are put toward funding scholarships for USD 204 students, education grants awarded to teachers and various other programs that benefit USD 204.

2015 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Feb. 13th

The Bonner Springs Education Foundation and the BSHS Alumni Association will host the annual BSHS Hall of Fame induction ceremony on February 13^th, 2015. The ceremony will honor this year’s recipients between the Women’s and Men’s Basketball Game with Piper at the District P E Center.

The BSHS Hall of Fame program began in 2006 and in the past nine years 22 Bonner Springs High School Alumni have been selected for membership. Nominations for the Hall are made on the basis of 1) Graduating from BSHS 2) Making a significant contribution to his/her profession or to the Bonner Springs/Edwardsville communities 3) Being a citizen in good standing.

The Foundation is happy to announce Darrell Donahue Class of 1944 and Jeff Harrington Class of 1979 as the 2015 BSHS Hall of Fame Inductees. Darrell a lifelong Bonner Springs resident and entrepreneur is well known for his commitment to the community at large. His many contributions include serving on the School Boards of Loring and USD #204, being a Youth Friends Volunteer, and serving in several leadership roles at First Christian Church. Darrell was a founding member of the Bonner Springs – Edwardsville Education Foundation. Jeff also is a life-long resident of Bonner Springs and is committed to the community he loves. He successfully assists in guiding the Alden – Harrington Funeral Home, serves on the Chamber Board, is a past President of the Foundation Board and is currently the Mayor of Bonner Springs. Jeff is also actively involved with the Bonner Springs United Methodist Church.

The BSHS Alumni Association will hold a pre-ceremony event prior to the Induction Ceremony which will feature memorabilia and yearbooks of Bonner Braves from past decades in the P E Center lobby by the Wall of Fame. The Wall of Fame featuring plaques which honor all BSHS Hall of Fame recipients is located on the Northeast wall of the District P E Center’s lobby area.

Following the basketball game the Alumni Association will host a reception/get-together at Twisters that will honor Darrell and Jeff and their families. All Bonner Braves past and present are invited to attend the event!

2014 Fall Home Tour

The Fall Home and Garden tour is set for September 27th from 10am to 4pm in Bonner Springs. A ticket allows you to check out five homes in the area, a discount at participating downtown merchants through 10/27/14, and a chance to win prizes! Braves Alumni Golf Open 2014

The Bonner Springs – Edwardsville Education Foundation is holding it’s annual Braves Alumni Open on Friday, Spetember 12th. The event will be at the Sunflower Hills Golf Club.  The Alumni Open is not just for BSHS graduates, it is open to anyone who would like to participate.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Student Scholarship Fund.
